Dr. Semih Çelik - Andreas Tietze Fellow

The first recipient of the Andreas Tietze Memorial Fellowship in Turkish Studies is Dr. Semih Çelik with his project entitled "A Veritable Child of Vienna - despite the Turkish name': Macarlı Abdullah Bey of Vienna and the Natural History Museum in Istanbul (1849-1874)".

Dr. Semih Çelik obtained his Ph.D. degree from the European University Institute in Florence in 2017 with a dissertation that focused on climate change, famines and empire-building in Anatolia during the first half of the 19th century. In fall 2016 he was a visiting scholar at the Scuola Normale Superiore, Center on Social Movement Studies (COSMOS), and he is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Koç University, College of Social Sciences and Humanities since Spring 2017. His current research project focuses on the environmental history of Anatolia during the long nineteenth century, with a particular focus on agricultural production and animal-human relations.
