This workshop will analyze travel literature (travelogues and guidebooks) from the 16th to the 20th centuries with regard to the practices, patterns, and significations of travel. In shifting the focus to routine and mundane aspects of traveling, it will serve to place travel narratives in a relational framework combining basic questions of infrastructure and transportation with the movements and pathways of individual travelers.

Claudia Römer gehört zu den profiliertesten und bekanntesten Turkolog*innen und Osmanist*innen, die weit über die Grenzen Wiens hohe Reputation genießt. Dies belegt nicht nur die Auszeichnung mit dem Liyakat Nişanı, dem "Order for the Merit" für ihre philologischen Arbeiten und ihre Studien zu osmanischen Urkunden. Claudia Römer hat nicht nur Generationen von Studierenden geprägt, sondern auch mit ihren Arbeiten die Entwicklung und Ausrichtung der internationalen Turkologie und Osmanistik mitgestaltet. Sie ist seit 1992 im Vorstand des Comité international d’études pré-ottomanes et ottomanes (CIÉPO), dessen Generalsekretärin sie seit 2002 ist. Seit 2005 ist sie überdies Mitglied des Exekutivausschusses der International Association of Ottoman Social and Economic History (IAOSEH), assoziiertes Mitglied des Centre d’études turques, ottomanes, balkaniques et centrasiatiques (CETOBaC, Paris) und seit 2014 im Editorial Board der renommierten Zeitschrift Turcica und seit 2015 im Advisory Board der Encyclopedia of Turkic Languages and Linguistics (ed. Lars Johanson).
Neben ihrer internationalen Einbettung, sind es aber vor allem Ihre Studien, die zeigen, dass Claudia Römer eine herausragende Wissenschaftlerin ist, die im Team arbeitet. Alle ihre Arbeiten aufzuzählen würde hier den Rahmen sprengen; verwiesen sei nur auf zwei wichtige Studien:

As the title “Turkey and Southeast Europe in the interwar period” suggests, the series will concentrate on the late Ottoman and early post-Ottoman/Republican periods and bring together scholars that work on different aspects of that era of radical ruptures and new foundations. Related memory culture and history-writing in many cases still fundamentally disagree. The historical distance of a whole century however invites new or overarching approaches. The series thus aims at a fresh and interconnected understanding of the emerging post-Ottoman world in the large context of the defining Treaty of Lausanne (1923).

For the sixth issue of Diyâr (Autumn 2022), we welcome original and as yet unpublished contributions from all research areas of Ottoman, Turkish and Middle Eastern Studies. Articles can be submitted to Julia Fröhlich (diyar@ergon-verlag.de) until February 15, 2022. Papers should not exceed a length of 60,000 characters (including spaces and footnotes). They should include an abstract (150-200 words) and a list of (up to) 6 keywords. Diyâr accepts contributions in German, English, and French. For more information, visit:

On the occasion of the centenary of the Republic of Turkey in 2023 GTOT/Diyâr welcomes proposals for up to two special issues that are dedicated to the trajectory of the Republic of Turkey in the past decades. Innovative ventures into understanding the Republic of Turkey in its historical, social, and cultural complexities are particularly welcome.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Transnational / global impact/perception of Kemalist Turkey
- Beyond the center(s): Provincial Kemalism
- Writing and printing in Kemalist Turkey
- Transnational Histories, Cultures, and Literatures
- Gender and Sexuality in Turkey

Guideline
The proposal for a special issue – including a description of the project (2,000–3,000 words) and either abstract of planned contributions or a call for papers – should be submitted to the editorial board. The editorial board may express its interest in the proposal, but a final decision regarding acceptance will be based on the submission of the whole issue to the editorial board, as well as on the peer review of each submitted paper.
A special issue typically consists of 6–8 papers. A paper should normally not exceed a length of about 60,000 characters. Papers may be in English, French, or German (click https://www.diyar.nomos.de/en/guidelines-for-authors for detailed guidelines).
