One-day workshop: HTRising Ottoman Manuscripts
(18 December 2020, University of Vienna)
HTRising Ottoman Manuscripts
This one-day workshop aims to discuss the possibilities of automatic text recognition for Ottoman manuscripts. The workshop intends to present the first findings of working with the tool Transkribus (transkribus.eu) and further discuss other tools as well as the potentials and challenges of HTRising Ottoman manuscripts.
The workshop will bring together graduate students who work on Ottoman manuscripts and experts of DH and Ottoman paleography. Besides presenting the first results of working with Transkribus, participants will have the possibility to use and test the software by deploying Ottoman texts of varying writing styles and contents. For this purpose, selected participants will be asked to prepare each one page of an Ottoman handwritten text, including a transcription.
The results of the workshop will be presented at the Turkologentag 2021 in Mainz www.turkologentag-2020.de
Participation
MA students and Ph.D. candidates are asked to submit an abstract of no more than 300 words, along with a one-page academic CV. Abstracts should include the nature of the Ph.D. project and the sources (Ottoman manuscripts) that are used, and a short statement of motivation to be part of the planned workshop.
The language of the workshop depends on the participant's English or German.
Funding
Selected participants are eligible to receive funding for flight/train tickets (plus local public transportation) and if needed, accommodation (one night). Flight tickets will be reimbursed up to 200 Euros. Ph.D. candidates are encouraged to seek additional funding.
