The Wiener Zeitschrift für die Kunde des Morgenlandes publishes essays and reviews in the fields of Egyptology, ancient Near Eastern philology (languages: Sumerian, Akkadian, Hittite, Hurrian, Elamite, etc.), religious, legal, economic and social history as well as Near Eastern archeology and art history, Arabic Studies, Islamic Studies, Iranian Studies, Judaism, Islamic Art History, Semitic Studies, and Turkology. The period covers the 4th millennium BC until the 3rd millennium AD. The areas treated are the Near East, including the expansion of the Ottoman Empire in Europe, North Africa, and Central Asia.

The review section focuses on monographs. Collected works and Festschriften are usually discussed in brief.

As the WZKM is a peer-reviewed journal, the essays are given to experts in their respective fields for assessment.
