Training Excavations

Students who want to focus more on the archaeological branch of Ancient Near Eastern Studies during their studies are advised to make an effort to participate in a timely fashion in an excavation for training. Such practical training can take place at a variety of institutions  (e.g. at the Department of Egyptology or Department of Prehistory and Historical Archaeology), but also outside the University of Vienna.

For several years, there has also been very successful cooperation between Viennese Ancient Near Eastern Studies and Dr. Peter M. Fischer of Gothenburg, who is occasionally engaged as a lecturer at our Department (http://www.fischerarchaeology.se/). Currently, his research focuses on the transition from the Late Bronze Age to the Iron Age, i.e. 1300-900 BCE.

Depending on what is on offer, information about other (one-time) training excavations, surveys, etc. is also provided here.
